Reviews of The Butterfly Effect 4 by Roxy

1) JCGE - Dark Kiss DXL
WTF?? HAHAHAHAHA!! This set me up for a FUN song... and you didn't disappoint! I almost died laughing at the opening part!!! Solid "get up and dance" mix. Your clapping sequence at 4:13 is mega and the stuff at how you transition at 4:28 is great. 5:42 has some great synth stuff going. This is a happy version of a happy song. Nicely done... I guess it's how it should be, but it sounds as if the end is cut off..

2) TSATR - Reaps Spring Time Mix
After the uplifting start to this compilation, I was surprised to be calmed down so suddenly by this mix. It has a peaceful quality to it.. lovely transition at 1:37 and the drum sequence from the POT mix from Reaps' 3rd volume was a nice surprise as I was not expecting them to appear here. Nice chimes at 2:34 but I think a split second late.. Amazing beat going on at 4:00 - love that synth stuff and the way he throws everything at it in layers at about 4:34, then backs away to the river sounds. mmm. Reaps Labor of Love Mix, no?

3) EC - Dreamtime Mix
Erm... not a lot going on here but for echos at the beginning and end. I mean, nothing WRONG with it, but... well... not much to say.

4) Stories of Old - NerWrak Remix
Wow, very cool beat straight off! Very impressive mix, I like this one a lot. Good transition at 2:37 and very nice at 3:44!! Interesting use of the M&S whip and great ending. Driving, cool, nicely done. Thank You!

5) FOTW - Axis Draws First Blood Mix
Ok, hated it. Sorry, Axis. Take all of those damn movie moments out, PLEASE. Way too distracting... other than that the beat is good, but it just goes on and on. Cool stuff at 4:29 and at 4:54 but frankly, I found it tedious... I kind of wanted to turn it off at 6:23...

6) IWYN - Jerry Jay's Synthoromanic Love Dub
I hate the song, IWYN. I was very non-plussed that I had to listen to a mix of it in the first place, much less one that went on for over 8 1/2 minutes! Well, ok, I put it on and was blown away, immediately..! Mostly because it doesn't sound like IWYN, thank God! All through this mix, I was surprised by how different it is, how imaginative, how dark and sexy. Amazing transition at 7:17 to a fecking GREAT synth sequence! Hmm, I'd call it the Twilight Harem Mix... yes, I would. I want you now, indeed. LOL

7) Blue Dress - Apathy in Motion Mix
I really do like this mix, my problem with it is that it sounds muffled. I'd love to hear a clean copy of it one day. Nice treatment, bad acoustics... 3:00 nice transition and a lovely end. Any chance of a redo?

#8 Rush - ...Mix is NIs
Way nice at the beginning here and the sequence at 0:17 is great but it doesn't change for almost 3 minutes! There is a nice part at 2:22 but generally it's monotonous. Sorry, Numie - a bit more variety would help loads.

9) The Love Thieves - Instrumentalium
Lovely, absolutely gorgeous. Wow.

10) IFL - Car Dealer Version
Erm.. What? Do we need another IFL mix?? Ack! Sorry, not my thing at all, not just that it's IFL. There are some interesting things going on at 1:19 and at 3:02 but I don't like listening to a mix for a couple of neat effects.

11) TDS - DFEG's White Dwarf Mix
Interesting treatment. I love the orig. song, so I was interested in what you might do.... sorry but all I can say is "interesting" because it IS, but that's it. I can't think of anything else to add.

Just Can't Get Enough
by 'dxl'

I am always expecting something extra but You always suprise me with even more original Intros ot Outros. You 'pushed-off' this track suprisingly again! I have no idea where it is from!? It's funny in very positive way! What about your mixing techniques - you're still improving, I mean you're better and better. I don't know how many versions of JCGE you used, but I like it 'cause some sequencies are new for me or I listened it only few times. I especially love the 'KICK' of the mix, it sounds a bit faster than original song. You have certainly choosen good beats and it fits together.

I don't know if it is like You wanted to do, but at 3:23 I miss a few bass tones so for me it sounds like it was cut inproperly...but on the other hand it's maybe because of faster transition between loops. The best part of this song comes just after the sequencies with the piano...when the chorus begins and that tiny synth sound at 5:43 is brilliant. Nice intention till the end. Everything is well 'united' together, so now I really understand that You were more than happy with this mix.

The Sun And The Rainfall
by 'Reaps'

I am a big fan of Reaps' darkness in his mixes. That's why I call him 'The Darkest Star' of us - remixers. Again - this one is very atmospheric. Water and wind is popular for 'The Sun And The Rainfall' as an Introduction. I hear that the main sequence is nearly similar to mine, which I used to my TSATR mix before...and also iSLAND used it for his 'Halo' mix in 'iSLANDER Taster' - so maybe we have the same musical thinking and ideas or that plug-in is simply popular and favourite. It starts at 1:05 ...then - after a while - the power of sweet choir is changed by power of drums!!! Beatz are so powerfull here and I love it!!!

Ha, I just wanted to write that 'dark' is in background only and it's really 'SPRING TIME' with those violins and orchestra but at 4:00 ...the bass appregiator and darkness is back again. This track is full of contrasts for me and I didn't recognise any problems with voice synchronisation...maybe I was focused on SFX so much, but I like the production here anyway

Everything Counts
by 'Dreamtime'

Everything it's an outstanding track we all must love. I expected more of this remix, but I was disappointed that it is (only) cut/paste mix as Alan wrote in his quick review. Let's hear where's the truth. And also - other thing I want to mention - this is propably the first DreamTime's mix I have ever listen to. Two and a half years before I also started mixing with cut/paste method...but after couple of tracks I find it boring and find myself to be more a music producent/composer rather than mixer.

It's quite a pitty that you haven't tried something with new CTA again acapellas...even it isn't everytime clear, the vocals from centre channel are good source where to begin. Anyway...although that there's nothing new in this mix for me, I appreciate added live part and the echoed/re-verbed end of this mix. If You are new in our 'remix brand' - WELCOME and keep up a good work, if you really like remixing, You're able to improve as well..
I am not telling that I am perfect...only a few guys here are...and I am still modest...,but I just wanted to tell that You can be better musically, mixing - I think - isn't a problem for You...

Stories Of Old
by 'NerWraK'

This is pleasure for my years, something new and fresh...and WELL DONE! That's why I like new ideas and melodies, sometimes it inspires me as well. And the other thing...I love the bass lines. Together - it's very 'dancy' and rhytmic! Stereo effect are also good and you have had fine idea to cut those vocals...

Maybe, there aren't any dramatical changes and transitions, but in my opinion, it doesn't matter. To conclude, this is a complex remix with additional samples (Lie To Me) and good choice of sounds, maybe one melodical change would be essential. But it depends...it works enough for me so I lost the words in the end. Congratulatons...

Fly on The Windscreen
by 'Axis'

I have a slightly misunderstanding feelings with this thing. Again - nice original introduction, musically correct, great 'analog' sound and bass - like an electro house style, faster tempo, but added 'talking - movie' parts are sometimes disturbing me from excellent music. Maybe it's because I simply DO NOT understand everything and don't know what is the connection or association between music and those parts.

...that was after I listened to it for the first time. Now it's clearer for me, when I hit 'repeat' button. And You achieved, Axis, that I am not using imagination like I was watching that movie on TV. It's very hypnotic together - not bad at all!!! and I am laughing in the end...'I just don't turn it off'...Nothing's really over!

I Want You Now
by 'Jerry Jay'

What can I write againts my own version. Should I critise myself or...? this dub version might be different for you - the original 'dub concept' was even longer. But the first part was maybe boring and still might me 'monotonous' - so I cut something 'cause I wanted to introduce the vocals and some original melodies sooner rather than later.

Voice was very hard to extract, and also the accapella from the MFTM Remaster isn't 100% clear, so the vocals might sound dull or overtuned. In the end, I was satisfied with final result. I didn't use the whole vocal parts as you can hear, but for a dub version is better 'cause I've had some troubles with mixing and sync. In conclusion it turned into a decent track, so there's nothing I am worried about. THX for all the comments and listening to the whole project. And for support of course!!!

Blue Dress
by 'Apathy In Motion'

First slower song of this album and this baladic/acoustic version fits here exactly! Atmosphere is so sweet and cute here - vey romatic if I can say it like that. 'Job's finished' and it's a good effort. It definitely deserves an applause. The music floats slowly thru the whole length of the song!

There's nothing better than that melody in the Intro, which is used several times during the mix. Great melodical idea, thank you for composing this one...

Rush
by 'Numanoid'

The album works here together very well. Slow balad is changed by powerfull melodic 'Rush' version. As I was listening last 3 days BE3 I find some similarities or connection with Your last contribution in 'The Butterfly Effect' series. The echoed bass line simply reminds me Your Lie To Me bass line from BE3. the first loops between 0:18 and 0:35 at least. The sound is different, but melody is similar and I just though..yeah..This is going to be another N-I's great mix! And it's true!!!

At 2:23 is the start of my favourite part and when the high short synth comes...it's beautiful along with the compination of bass melody sequencies. Another thing what I really like is the fact that it floats gradually till the and. Addition of the snare drum at 4:16 is 'spot on'. Perfect remix and thank You, Inge!

The Love Thieves
by 'Ecnelis'

That's it. Everyone's different taste. And I like it as a nice interlude before the last tracks. The bass drum is maybe to strong for the song like this...but there's no other thing I can critisise.

For me, the strings, synths and the piano are better here than the bass. Especially the synth sound at 1:22 is really cup of my tea! But I am sad that You used that great sound only once in the mix. Never mind...

I Feel Loved
by 'Kennet1000'

Let's hear if it there are only 'BOOMs' in this mix. I must admit that the hard beat and bass is dominant. But it's another style...I am sorry that there are no additional melodies, although I like some effects (siren in INTRO, laser guns and some other things in background) and underground dance/club atmosphere.

To be honest, it's really harder to listen to it, You need a proper mood, some biers and the podium. I can see this track playing somewhere during the open-air festival with the fog and light effects.
I know the bass/drum line, which starts at 2:52, but I don't remember where it is from? Any clue Kennet???

The Darkest Star
by 'DFEG'

The last track of the album. I don't beleive that I am in the end of this review. As DFEG mentioned several times and because of that I was looking for that, because I was really curious how DFEG remixed this hard track.

Good rhytm and tempo, nice organ going from left to right, some bobbling basslines, unusual drums for the song like this on. very independent and relaxing, not so flustrating and dark like an original. I like that it's different with new ideas and effects. Nice remix, DFEG. I like it. Really odd compination of sounds, but take it like a compliment rather than a criticism.

Reviews of The Butterfly Effect 4 by DFEG

01 Just Can't Get Enough (The Dark Kiss Mix)
Brilliant intro of course! Lots of good ideas and arrangements in there. The track lacks unity as a whole I think, but then that could also be considered good... Check out the early 90s Italian house segment towards the end starting at 4:51!

02 The Sun And The Rainfall (Reaps Spring Time Mix)
I LOVE the intro which made me think of Orbital for some reason. The track can be little monotonous at times - I think it would have benefited greatly from using more effects so the sound would not be so "clean" all the way through.

03 Everything Counts (Dreamtime Mix)
Good old fashioned extended cut. I like the idea of using the 101 version, but would have like more blending of the studio and live versions.

04 Stories Of Old (NerWraK Remix)
I like the driving beats! Good outro too. Overall very efficient if a little same-y at times.

05 Fly On The Windscreen (Axis Draws First Blood Mix)
Great title and concept - where do you get it all from Ax? Very clean drums and bass - maybe too clean? (I'm a sucker for filtered, twisted sounds as you might have noticed...)

06 I Want You Now (Jerry Jay's Synthoromantic Love Dub)
My favorite so far. Excellent production and lots of personality. Really good electro vibe.

07 Blue Dress (Apathy In Motion Mix)
Excellent intro and use of the orchestral and piano pads. Very atmospheric througout with great touches here and there, like the clarinet.

08 Rush (And A Push And The Mix Is N-I's)
A very difficult song to remix in my opinion, and the result is excellent! It was a challenge to make the additional layers and the original sound coherent with such a grungy original sound, so hats off!

09 The Love Thieves (Instrumentalium)
Very well produced with a nice relaxed feel. A good instrumental, somewhere in between a cover and a remix. Just a little short maybe?

10 I Feel Loved (Car Dealer Version)
Nice to hear a bit of hardcore once in a while! I would have benefited from the addition of a good old 303 in my opinion, but that's just me. In love twiddling knobs (no pun intended).

11 The Darkest Star (DFEG's White Dwarf Mix)
No comment. I should have used more compression when mixing it down, if you ask me. Also, I have to come clean: the bassline was very much inspired from Ikon - Signs (Jody Wisternoff Remix). It's the second track in this mix, you'll see what I mean... and the organ almost a straight lift off the live version of Madonna's Live to Tell from the recent Confessions Tour. There, I feel better know I've confessed.

Reviews of The Butterfly Effect 4 by Kaiser Soze

1. Just Can't Get Enough - Great intro (lol), great sfx, great mix. Nice job Chris.

2. The Sun & The Rainfall - really love the added sfx/music but the vocals seem a bit out of sync sometime. Really nice mix from Ian anyway.

3. Everything Counts - not much to say about this one. A typical extended/cut & paste mix. Well done, but doesn't add anything to the song.

4. Stories Of Old - really love the beginning of the mix. The rest is very well done too but I found it a bit repetitive at the end.

5. Fly On The Windscreen - never thought I could like a DM mix with Sly :) Really great mix by Axis.

6. I Want You Now - one of my favourite by far. Excellent job Jerry.

7. Blue Dress - another of my fav'. Trully great mix by Roger.

8. Rush - the mixes by Numanoid have always been one of the highlights of the butterflies series for me and this one is no exception. Typical N-I mix, so great mix .

9. The Love Thieves - not bad but sounds a bit like those 'synthetizer greatest' covers. Nothing against Ecnelis but it's just not my thing.

10. I Feel Loved - the only one I really don't like on this bootleg...and also the only one i've skipped before the end. Sorry Kennet, it's just too 'boom boom boom' for me...

11. The Darkest Star - probably the weirdest track of the boot, but it really gets addictive. Two thumbs up.

The Butterfly Effect 4 - April 2007

Well, here it is. Volume 4 of a rather unique compilation series.
Beginning in 2006, The Butterfly Effect was devised to have 11 different remixers create 11 exclusive remixes from the 11 studio albums of Depeche Mode.
No track can appear again once it has featured on one of the compilations and remixers can only ever contribute 1 track from any one album.
Sounds terribly complicated, but as the four albums created thus far prove, it's an idea that really seems to work.

Below are details and links to the latest album, all tracks being especially created for inclusion from late January to late March 2007.

My thanks go to all members of the Strange-Love board http://www.dmpire.com/ , members of the delle101 forum http://www.delle101-2ndhome.de/ and to those who continue to support fan remixes and the original music of Depeche Mode.

Anybody interested in revisiting the 3 previous 'Butterfly' albums can visit http://www.dmremix.be/ and look in the bootlegs section. Kaiser's fantastic site is full of LOTS of other DM related downloads as well.....and always worth a visit.

Now......to the album.
All tracks are available in 320 kbps (individual downloads) or 192 kbps (as 3 seperate zip files). Please feel free to share these links.

You can get the tracks here: http://www.4shared.com/dir/2369807/6f293735/sharing.html
Click the download on the far right and a new page will open up, give it about 10 seconds or so and a section will appear Mp3 Info - This is where you can download from.
This link also has the covers in a zipfile.
